Dreaming of a New Kitchen, but don't want to break the bank?

Do you have your heart set on a new kitchen but can’t bear to think of a costly remodel? On average, a kitchen remodel costs between $75 to $250 per square foot - which means the average homeowner spends anywhere from $13,000 to $38,000 for a new kitchen.

But what if there was a more straightforward, less expensive way to give your kitchen a make-over? What if you could give your kitchen a new look for a fraction of the price? We have come up with five effective ways to change the look of your kitchen on a budget.

Clear Clutter

Before making any changes, clear the clutter. Kitchens tend to have more mess than most of our rooms. With cabinets, countertops, and pantries, it is easy to overcrowd this busy room.

Keeping surfaces like window sills and countertops clear will make the entire room look larger and cleaner and maximize the workspace. Purchase organizers that you can hang over the door or inside cupboards. Make kitchen stations - like a breakfast station where you keep your coffee pot, toaster, and mugs.

Add Open Shelving

Open shelving is a great way to keep items off of precious kitchen countertops. It’s also a fantastic way to show off fancy china or bring in a touch of greenery with plants and herbs.

Make sure you decide what you want to display before purchasing shelves. Knowing the height and weight of items will determine which shelves you buy.

Adding natural wood shelves softens the feel of the kitchen. However, if you have wooden cupboards, consider sleek white shelves that will add dramatic contrast to your space.

Create the Mood with Lighting

Lighting has a significant effect on how we feel. Generally, designers use warm lighting in kitchens. You don’t want overly-dim lightning; instead, use brighter, warmer lighting, which creates a welcoming feeling.

When switching out your lighting, consider exchanging light switch panels to match the fixtures in the kitchen, especially cabinet handles. Fixtures define and strengthen the style of a room with subtle details.

Lightening fixtures can be pricey, depending on where you shop. Try big box stores like Home Depot or Ikea. They have tremendous selections at a fraction of the price you would spend anywhere else.

Re-energize with New Curtains and Paint

Never underestimate the power of new curtains and a fresh coat of paint to change the look of a room.

Changing the color of your kitchen walls is a massive change with a small price tag. Painting your kitchen yourself will save you quite a bit of money

New curtains that match your fresh paint will make a big difference. Changing kitchen curtains every few years is a good idea, even if you aren’t trying to update due to the smoke and smells that frequent your kitchen.

Splurge on some new accent rugs, dish towels, and pictures that match your fresh paint and curtains, making it feel like a brand-new room.

Add a Backsplash

One of the most cost-effective ways to update your kitchen is by adding a tile backsplash. This dramatic change is super simple. Clean the wall area, remove any grease, apply a thin-set adhesive, and set the tile. Once the bond has been set, apply the grout, let it dry, and voila - you have a beautiful tile backsplash.

If you don’t want to apply tile backsplash, use a peel and stick backsplash, stencils and paint, or even wallpaper.

Updating Your Kitchen On a Budget

With the average kitchen remodel costing up to $38,000, it is understandable why many kitchens stay outdated. Using these inexpensive tips will have you loving your new kitchen without emptying your wallet.
