Alison Giese Interiors DC Dining Room.jpgBuilding a new home, or committing to a large renovation can be a daunting or exhilarating endeavor. The prospect of starting from a clean slate allows homeowners to put together their wishlist of functional and stylish design elements in a way that truly integrates their personal style and living requirements.

There are so many decisions to be made throughout the process, and homeowners can feel overwhelmed by the number of decisions that must be made, and underwhelmed by the range of choices offered. Some builders offer the services of an interior designer to help guide clients through the process of finish selection. A designer can help clients determine the overall design scheme through finish selection, and help everyone stay focused on selecting materials that are true to that design vision.

It is very easy for homeowners to get caught up in the budgeting of the build or renovation, and overlook the fact that their existing furnishings may not work with the new space - in terms of scale or style. For someone adding a large bump-out to a small cottage, the existing furniture that accommodated their smaller home may look overwhelmed or sparse when placed in the larger area. Someone moving from a particular style of home, with similarly characteristic furniture may find those pieces are not compatible with the style of a new build. Clients may also feel that the bright, new shiny build makes existing furnishings seem shabby or worn. Clients might also use up so much of their budget on the structure itself, that there’s little to nothing left to furnish the new home.

A designer working alongside a builder, or hired independently by the client during the building process, can offer expertise in space planning, and budgeting for interior design, and can also help ensure the home’s interiors are connected to the new build on move-in day. The end goal being a home that’s as beautiful on the inside, as it is on the out!
