take time to unwind in washington dc

It can be hard to recharge in the nation’s Capital. In our current world climate, the healthiest thing we can all do is make sure we power down and relax. Even though Washington DC is a bustling city, there are quite a few places you can escape and recharge.

Rock Creek Park

Rock Creek Park is 1,700-acres of soothing green space that is home to Rapids Bridge. Standing on this tranquil pedestrian-only footbridge, you can watch the water sweep over the ancient rocks in the stream and get lost in nature. The park also boasts the Rapids Bridge hike, a two-mile loop that transports you from hectic city life to peaceful forest.

The Living Room - Ritz Carlton, Georgetown

The Living Room, located in the Ritz Carlton, Georgetown, is a great place for city dwellers searching for peace and comfort with a bit of flare. Cuddle up to the large wood-burning fireplace with some spiked cider in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton. The swanky lounge offers peace and solitude in an urban setting. For an optimum day of relaxing, schedule a day at the hotel’s luxurious spa.

Summer House

Just a hop-skip-and-a-jump outside of the Capital is a hidden hideout. Summer House, constructed in 1880, was built to improve the Capital grounds because visitors complained they were unable to find a place to rest while visiting. The small hexagon-shaped, almost hobbit-house-like structure offers several stone seats and shelter to those needing an escape from a stressful day. The nearby fountain provides a peaceful, rhythmic sound that helps release stress and breathe in new life.

Francis A. Gregory Library

We all know libraries are hushed sanctuaries and the Francis A. Gregory Library is this and more. Designed by British architect David Adjaye, architect of the National Museum of American History and Culture, the library is in a class of its own. The library is on the edge of forested parkland and has diamond-shaped windows, pink ceilings, and a peaceful outdoor terrace. Climb in one of the comfy chairs, grab a book, and get lost in another world.

The Gardens at the Franciscan Monastery

Established in the late 1800s, The Gardens at the Franciscan Monastery were created to offer visitors the holiest of all sights without the long journey to the Holy Land - the Chapel of the Ascension, the Tomb of the Virgin Mary, and the Grotto of Gethsemane. Although it was built for prayer, visitors are welcome to relax and recharge in the stillness and peace the gardens and paths through the woods offer.
