From a chocolate festival to a Chinese New Year parade, DC has fun activities to add to your winter playlist.

Chocolate LOVERS Festival, Fairfax

Since 1993, the Chocolate Lovers Festival has been a Fairfax tradition. The three-day festival launches on February 4 with activities for the entire family. Amateur and professional bakers alike bring their knack for creating deliciousness in the 2022 Chocolate Lovers Festival Chocolate Challenge. Be sure to enter now; fees and applications are due January 14, 2022. Other activities include a cakewalk, finding the golden ticket, and consuming the best chocolate in the DC area from local vendors like Mike’s Fudge, Capitol Chocolate Fountains, and The Capital Candy Jar.

Ice Skating at the Washington Harbour Ice Rink, Georgetown 

Head down to the Georgetown Waterfront from now through March 13 for picturesque views, tasty restaurants, and a festive atmosphere. Enjoy dinner before hitting DC’s largest outdoor skating rink, at any of the several restaurants with heaters on outdoor patios and cozy fire pits. The Washington Harbour Ice Rink at the waterfront is open seven days a week from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm (11:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays) with special weekly events throughout the season.

Discover an Underground World, Luray, VA

Just 10 minutes outside of DC, Luray Caverns is the most extensive cavern system in the eastern part of the United States and is a perfect getaway on a cold winter day. Check out the underground world of stalactites, stalagmites, and other incredible limestone formations in the mammoth cave system. After your tour, enjoy the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum and discover America’s first frontier in the Shenandoah Heritage Museum. There are so many things to do at Luray Caverns; plan an overnight at Luray Cavern motels and reap all the fun Luray has to offer.

Take in a Play, Arlington 

Encore Stage & Studio, located at the Gunston Arts Center Theatre in Arlington, is “theater by kids, for kids.” Since 1967, the studio has produced over 200 plays. Each year, Encore produces eight productions for families to enjoy. Commedia Cinderella is playing from January 7 through the 16th. This play takes the classic story of Cinderella and ads slapstick comedy and an Italian comedic twist. Add to the fun with preordered Magic Mix that includes a Starbucks Frappuccino, M & M's, and other tasty treats (must be ordered when purchasing tickets online).

Chinese New Year Parade, Chinatown

On February 6, 2022, toast to the Year of the Tiger at the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade in Chinatown with live performances and Chinese Dragon Dances. Over 30 dance groups, organizations, marching bands, and children’s groups are expected to participate. The event begins at 2 pm on H Street NW, between 6th Street and 8th Street. Spectators usually wear red to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Although Chinese businesses usually close during the Chinese New Year holiday, businesses in Chinatown stay open for the festivities.
